Proposed Admissions Policy for entry in September 2014
The Governing Body of Sutton Grammar School are formally consulting on their proposed Admissions Policy for entry to the school from September 2014. There are no significant changes proposed at Sutton Grammar School compared to the policy and procedures for September 2013 entry – in this last year the school offered a two stage testing process that has worked very well. For 2014 more schools are joining the group. The two schools joining the group this year want to complete both the common eligibility test and their schools’ second stage tests by 31 st October and so the common eligibility test will need to be slightly earlier. Saturday 21 st September 2013 is proposed. Sutton Grammar School proposes to keep to a later date for the second stage test, to avoid having so many tests early in the Autumn term and making sure that boys are fully up to their best standard before the crucial second stage is taken. We believe that the common eligibility test gives parents the information they need to decide whether or not their son may be suitable for selective education and this will be known nice and early (by 26 th September).
Nearly 250 parents responded to a survey that was conducted amongst those who used the Sutton Grammar School PTA mock tests and the key features of the system now being used by Sutton Grammar School and three other local selective schools received good support. We are keen to minimise the impact of tutoring and believe that the best way to do this is to ensure the tests focus on the core skills covered in primary schools – especially English and maths.
Based on the responses to this consultation and that at the other schools there will need to be some final tweaking of detailed procedures such as the exact design of the supplementary form which will be a common document for the four schools in the group.
