Critical Thinking at AS Level is followed by all Sixth Form students at Sutton Grammar School from Year 12.
The skills you will acquire and develop underpin all your other subjects and will be of benefit to you throughout your life. These skills are all about arguments: how to recognise them, how to analyse them and how to evaluate them.
You don’t need to be an expert in a given field to avoid being fooled by bad reasoning. You just need to learn how to question what you read and what people tell you.
At AS level you will be concerned with:
- credibility of evidence
- assessing arguments
- evaluating arguments
- developing arguments of your own
Drawing on a wide range of examples and sources, including newspaper articles and debate on topical issues, you will acquire the following skills:
- how to understand and apply the basic language of reasoning
- how to apply and understand different patterns of reasoning
- how to recognise and evaluate special types of reasoning
- how to decide on the credibility of sources of information
- how to assess arguments and analyse their structure
- how to develop and present arguments
Assessment is by examination.
