  CURRICULUM > GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS

Government and Politics is offered as an AS and A-Level option, with most AS-Level students choosing to continue the course to the full A-Level. Teaching is based in the Sixth-Form Centre.

The AS-Level part of the course involves a study of British Politics and its structures, and, as well as classroom based teaching, includes visits to Parliament, visits to conferences to hear leading politicians and commentators, and meetings with politicians and media representatives. It is meant to be a dynamic study - the theoretical principles studied need to be understood in the context of current political developments. Students will therefore be expected to use newspapers, current affairs magazines and other news media to stay abreast of British political developments.

The second year of the full A-Level course (also known as the A2) involves the study and discussion of political ideologies. We consider the major ideologies of Conservatism, Socialism and Liberalism, as well as Nationalism, Fascism and Anarchism. We also examine the application of the three major ideologies, and Nationalism in the UK today.

The department also maintains a regular blog to keep students up to date on current affairs, and provide links to a variety of online sources. This can be accessed here.
