Music at Sutton Grammar School is vibrant and very well supported. There are many opportunities for boys to take part in music-making, both at school in the classroom, and in public performance.
Here are the main features of the Music Department's work:
- The school has an Orchestra of 45 boys.
- The school has a Senior Choir and Junior Choir with 25 boys in each.
- A House Music Competition is held every Summer Term. Students can enter on any instrument or voice. The qualifiers go through to the finals and the winners play in the House Music and Drama Gala Concert.

- We have a Jazz/Funk Group, String Ensemble, A Cappella Group and Rock Groups a plenty!

- A Musical every two years in conjunction with Sutton High School for Girls.

- We have concerts throughout the year featuring the Orchestra, Choirs, soloists and Bands etc.
The Music Department has seven specialist instrumental teachers provided through the Local Education Authority Sutton's Youth Music Service for individual instrumental tuition.

Music Department Policy
The Music Department's aim is:
- That every child should receive its entitlement to a broad music curriculum which can be accessed through first-hand, practical experience.
- To help pupils to develop an awareness of the aesthetic and creative qualities of music and also develop the musical expertise as to achieve this.
The Music Department's objectives are:
- To achieve this aim through a range of activities relating to composing, performing, listening and appraising, in accordance with the National Curriculum for Music.
- That pupils are given opportunities to undertake a balanced programme of activites that build on previous work and take into account previous achievement, whether individual, as a group, or as part of a class.
- That pupils are given opportunities to make use of Information Technology to create and record music.
- That pupils will perform and listen to music in a variety of genres and styles from different cultures and periods. The repertoire will be broad, and designed to extend pupils' musical experience and knowledge.
- That the music curriculum will be progressively more demanding and take account of pupils' different stages of musical development, needs and backgrounds.
- That pupils will have opportunities and access to engage in extra-curricular activites, instrumental teaching and the various music groups offered by the Music Department.
