The boys in Y7 and Y8 follow the local authority’s Agreed Syllabus which covers the world’s main religions and themes such as festivals, God & gods, and personal responses to ultimate questions.
From Y9 onwards, a multi-faith GCSE course is followed by every student which is suitable for boys of any faith (or none). All students follow the OCR Religious Studies B (Philosophy and Ethics) full course syllabus. Each unit is studied from the perspective of one of the major faiths (Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Hinduism). Candidates are required to answer questions on eight units and unit titles include: Belief About Deity, Religious and Spiritual Experience, Religion and Science, Good and Evil, Religion and Human Relationships, Religion and Medical Ethics, Religion and Equality, Religion, Poverty and Wealth, and Religion, Peace and Justice. There are two, two-hour examinations and no coursework is involved.
For each religion studied candidates will be expected: to have investigated the influence of religious beliefs, values and traditions; to have developed the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and, where appropriate, other responses to ethical issues; and to have identified, investigated and be able to respond to the fundamental questions of life raised by the religions studied.
This course also gives excellent preparation for the A-level course in Philosophy.
