Each file that is available for download directly from the Sutton Grammar School website has a little icon next to it, indicating the file's format. The following table summarizes these file formats and, where applicable, describes how to obtain the software necessary to view such files.

Portable Document Format (*.pdf)

This is the most common file format for documents available on the Internet. Most of the downloadable documents on the Sutton Grammar School Website use this format.

Microsoft Word Document (*.doc)

The Microsoft Word Document format is typically used for letters, fliers, posters and other word-processed documents.
Microsoft Word is part of the Microsoft Office suite of applications.

Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (*.xls)

The Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet format is typically used for mathematical and statistical information, or tables of data.

The Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation format is typically used for slide-based presentations, or information in presentation format. It can also be used for posters.

ZIP File Format (*.zip)

This is a compressed (archive) file format, used to reduce the size of larger data files. It is also used to bundle together multiple files. Files stored in this format must be 'extracted' from the ZIP archive using a decompression utility.

Image Formats
 

JPEG Image (*.jpg)

This is the most common image format for digital photography, and can be handled by a wide range of applications.
Windows XP and Mac OS X feature built-in support for JPEG format images.
Internet Explorer can be used to view JPEG images on earlier Windows versions.

Another common image format, also supported by a wide range of applications.
Windows XP and Mac OS X feature built-in support for PNG format images.
Internet Explorer can be used to view PNG images on earlier Windows versions.
