AS and A-Level: Sixth Form
If you are looking for a future using communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, team-work, organisational skills and independence, as well as excellent job prospects, then a modern language is for you.
In French, Spanish and German we examine contemporary cultural, social and political contexts of the country through a variety of stimuli such as literary texts, newspaper and magazine articles, and films. We also enrich this academic experience with visits to relevant theatre productions, film club, French cafés and a Paris trip.
Study of literature, famous artistic achievements, periods of history and geographical areas are possible, and the student will be able to talk and write in detail on these. Weekly one to one tuition with native speaker assistants accelerates oral competence, and in addition to participation in possible departmental trips and exchanges, students are encouraged to go abroad during the course to immerse themselves in the language and life of the countries they are studying.
That they can by this stage perform convincingly in a foreign language can be a confirmation of advanced linguistic confidence and independence.
[Students taking French, German or Spanish at AS level are expected to have an 'A' in the chosen language of study at GCSE.]
