Sixth Form Admissions
Interested in joining our Sixth Form? Find out more here.
Sutton Grammar School admits 135 boys into year 7 each September, into five forms of 27 boys. Each boy is affiliated to one of five Houses, and boys retain their house affiliation throughout their time at the school.
Boys are admitted to the school on the basis of their academic ability, which we assess via an entrance test taken when the boys are in year 6.
Sutton Grammar School complies with the coordinated admissions arrangements administered by the London Borough of Sutton. 135 boys are admitted into Year 7 having gained a place through the entrance tests and placed Sutton Grammar School on their Common Application Form. Please note that, due to over-subscription, meeting the required standard at our entrance tests does not guarantee the offer of a place at the school.
Please refer to the admissions policy and admissions procedures for our entrance criteria and other relevant information.
The Selective Eligibility Test (SET) is the first stage test common to Greenshaw High School (selective band), Nonsuch High School for Girls, Sutton Grammar School, Wallington County Grammar School, Wallington High School for Girls, and Wilson’s School. Some of these schools may have further stages of testing. Please see the individual schools’ websites for details.
Sutton Grammar School operates a second stage of testing, which it shares with Wilson’s School and Wallington Boys.
If your son is due to transfer to secondary school in September 2025/2026 then please join us at our Open Evening on Wednesday, 25 September from 4.45pm to 8.00pm. Last admission will be at 7.20pm so to avoid disappointment please arrive early to hear the Headteacher talk and have a tour of the school.
Please note that:
We look forward to welcoming you and your son on the evening. In the meantime, you might like to enjoy our virtual Open Evening here.
Occasionally we have vacancies outside the normal points of admission, which are the beginning of Year 7, and the Sixth Form. Such vacancies are rare and we cannot predict when they might occur.
If you are interested in applying for one of these occasional vacancies for your son, you must complete a London Borough of Sutton mid-term application form, irrespective of where you live. You do not apply directly to the school. The LBS mid-term application form can be downloaded below.
We will be informed that you have made an application to the school and, in the vast majority of cases, we will respond by indicating that we have no vacancies and will not be able to admit your son to the school. His name will then be kept on a waiting list for the remainder of the academic year in which you have applied. The onus is on you to let us know at the end of that academic year if you wish your son’s name to remain on the waiting list.
In the event that there is a vacancy, all parents with boys on the waiting list will be contacted to see if they are still interested in pursuing their application. Candidates will be invited in for testing and the place will then be offered to the best performing boy of selective ability. For ad hoc vacancies of this sort, candidates are typically tested in English, science, mathematics, and a modern foreign language, at the appropriate level for the age of the candidates.
We do not test boys on the waiting list unless there is a vacancy and parents/guardians have a statutory right of appeal if a place is not offered.
At Sixth Form level, all students must meet a minimum level of overall success at GCSE. Entry is based on competitive grades, and priority is always given to males already at the school. For new admissions to the school, places will be determined by the rank order of examination results and are subject to the availability of places on individual subject courses.
We will be offering a minimum of 25 places to external students, and regularly take over 40. External places are open to both males and females on an equal basis. We are pleased that since we opened up our sixth form to female students we have admitted equal numbers of new males and new females, and have over 40 female students in the Sixth Form.
