Year 8 Diet, Health & Fitness Learning Objectives

Pupils should be able to:

  • know the three main food types: proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
  • know that different foods supply different types of food and what the best sources for each type of food are.
  • know the main function of carbohydrates in the diet is to supply energy.
  • know the main constituents of carbohydrates and what deficiency diseases are caused when they are lacking in the diet.
  • know the main function of proteins is they are the material used to build cells during growth and tissue repair.
  • identify the main constituents of proteins and the deficiency diseases caused when they are lacking in the diet.
  • understand that proteins are made from amino acids joined together in long chains and that amino acids must be supplied ready-made in the diet.
  • recall the main function of fats in the diet is to supply and store energy in the body.
  • recall the main constituents of fats: fatty acids and glycerol, and what the diseases are when too much fat is consumed in the diet or fat is deficient in the diet.
  • know the functions of the different minerals and vitamins in the diet.
  • know how to calculate how much energy a food supplies.
  • know how the calorimeter works and why it is an improvement on just burning a peanut from a bunsen.
  • identify that different people need different amounts of energy from their diet and the reasons why.
  • produce a histogram of the constituents of their diet for a 24 hour period.
  • recall that tissues are specialised for function.
  • name the main bones of the skeleton.
  • describe skeletal function.
  • name the main parts of the synovial joint.
  • name 4 types of joint – ball and socket, hinge, gliding and swivel.
  • know that muscles contract and pull but don’t push.
  • know that muscles work in antagonistic pairs – example biceps and triceps.
  • know that muscles attach to bones by inelastic tendons.
  • know that Ligaments join bones reducing the chance of dislocation.
  • know that energy from respiration is needed for muscle contraction.
  • know that muscles also come in smooth types e.g. in the gut and cardiac in the heart.
  • know the structure and main names of heart areas.
  • know the main role of red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets.
