Year 7 Food & Balanced Diet
Learning Objectives
Pupils should be able to:
-
recall the three food groups as carbohydrates (starches and sugars) for energy needs, proteins for growth and repair, fats for energy storage and insulation.
-
know the food tests for starch (iodine), glucose (Benedicts + heat), protein (Biurets + sodium hydroxide).
-
Understand that minerals and vitamins are essential in the diet notably calcium for teeth and bones, iron for red blood cells (haemoglobin), vitamin C for blood and skin to prevent scurvy and D for bones to prevent rickets.
-
know that fibre is largely cellulose (remember cell walls) and helps food move through the gut.
-
know that water is essential as a solvent, reactant, coolant, supporter, and transport medium.
-
recognise that people need different balances at different stages of their lives e.g. children need relatively more protein than adults and pregnant women need enough iron to make more blood cells for themselves and for the foetus.
-
know that foods are neither good nor bad, but the balance of intake is important.
-
know that obesity is associated with heart disease and diabetes.
-
know that starvation can affect brain growth and immunity know that too much sugar can increase plaque on teeth and cause tooth and gum diseases.
