Momentum Learning Objectives

Content

Students should understand the following:

  • momentum = mass x velocity
  • Principle of conservation of linear momentum
  • How to apply the principle quantitatively to problems in one dimension
  • Force as the rate of change of momentum
  • F=Δ(mv)/Δt
  • Impulse FΔt = Δ(mv) where F is constant
  • Significance of the area under a force-time graph
  • Situations where forces vary with time, (e.g. kicking a football, crumple zones, packaging)
  • Elastic & Inelastic Collisions
  • The application of momentum conservation issues in the context of ethical transport design
