Psychology is a subject which covers a wide spectrum of approaches. Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions affecting behaviour. It provides the dedicated student with fascinating insights into the structure and function of the human mind, as well as attempts to pinpoint what makes people tick. This course covers a broad range of subjects, including social, cognitive psychology, developmental and biopsychology. In addition, Psychology uses scientific methods to explain human behaviour for example the role of genetics in the development of schizophrenia.

Psychology covers a broad range of subjects, including social, cognitive psychology, developmental and biopsychology. In addition, Psychology uses scientific methods to explain human behaviour for example the role of genetics in the development of schizophrenia.

Psychology is suited to those who:

  • Possess good mathematics skills, this is useful as you will study statistics in Year 13. You will also need to interpret graphical illustrations and calculate and interpret findings from psychological investigations.
  • Are organised and determined, Psychology isn’t easy and you will have to learn a lot of information and research.
  • Have some interest in Science, Psychology is a Science and you will need to learn scientific concepts, as well as conduct your own practical investigation in a scientific manner.
  • Have an interest in people as in Psychology everything can be applied to humans and your own experiences.
  • Possess A love of discussion: Discussion and debate is always important in Psychology. You must be prepared to contribute.
  • Have good literacy and numeracy skills: You will need to perform lots of statistics and be able to write logical, clear and well explained essays.

Psychology courses are very popular, both because of their intrinsic appeal and in their value as a step on the way, not just to careers in psychology, but careers in the health professions and any other employment sector that relies on people skills and personnel interactions and communication. In year 2 of the course the focus is narrowed to look at specific areas of Psychology, which are:

  • Cognition and Development
  • Aggression
