The 80th Anniversary of VE Day
VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day which is commemorated every year on 8th May. It was on this day in 1945 that Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced the end of the Second World War in Europe, following Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender the day before. However, fighting continued in the Pacific until Japan’s surrender on 15th August 1945, known as VJ Day. The official ending of WWII was 2nd September 1945.
After nearly six years of war the British people took to the streets in celebration on VE Day, famously gathering around Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square rejoicing. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the original VE Day and will be observed in various ways, including tea parties and military parades up and down the country. It provides a poignant time of reflection for the nation to remember the Second World War generation.
Our school library is home to many books about the Second World War and what happened immediately afterwards. Our star pick for you is “After the War,” by Tom Palmer, which makes reference to the VE Day celebrations. Take a look at this video by the author Tom Palmer, where he reads an excerpt from his book. He has also written a lot of other fiction books on WWII available in our school library and on SORA.
