Welcome back as we kick off a new school year! Did you manage to read any interesting books during the Summer Holidays? Please do visit the library and tell us what you’ve read. We would really like to hear your book suggestions, or feel free to send us an email!
We want to give a special welcome to our new year 7 and year 12 students! There are many exciting activities planned in the library this term, including our new KS3 book club, our annual bookmark competition and celebrating Poetry Day on October 2nd. Also, Blog Buddies will once again be open to year 9 students this year; stay tuned for updates on this.
You may have noticed some changes in the school library, as we now have more computers and tables available for studying. Our library opening times are 8.35am – 3.45pm term time.

Celebrating ‘Read An Ebook Day’ with Sora
On 18th September we celebrated Read an Ebook Day in school. This was a chance for our whole school community to explore Sora (free to access for all SGS students) and find their next ‘on the go read.’ It’s so easy to browse the themed selections on Sora and there is always a multitude of ebooks, audio books, comics, magazines and newspapers right at your fingertips.

Our quick Sora recommendations: Serpent & Stone by Shelby Mahurin (KS4); Home Body by Theo Parish (KS3/4); Little Bang by Kelly McCaughrain (KS4); A Boy Called Hope by Lara Williamson (KS3); Infinity Files by S.M. Wilson (KS3).
If you have problems logging in, you’ll find a pdf on school P-drive.
Download the Sora app today and get started. We are sure you’ll enjoy browsing.
Poetry Day 2nd October 2025
We will be celebrating Poetry Day in our school library on 2nd October 2025. Poetry Day is an annual celebration and we encourage all SGS students to share poetry at home and at school. Remember to keep your eyes peeled for Poetry events happening around your local area. This year’s theme is Play.
Author Manjeet Mann has teamed up with the British Library to celebrate National Poetry Day this year. Manjeet will be exploring her verse novel ‘Roar’ to deliver KS3 students an interactive and inclusive livestream event. We will be running this on our big library screen on Poetry Day.

To get ahead for Poetry Day, why not borrow one of Manjeet’s books: The Crossing or Run Rebel, we are sure you will be inspired. Other verse novel authors you might like to explore are: Benjamin Zephaniah and Joseph Coelho.
Take a look at this fantastic BBC Bitesize intro to rhythm, where you can discover how modern poetry is presented to an audience to enhance the meaning of ideas and words in a poem.

New Graphic Novels
Check out My Deer Friend Nokotan by Oshioshio (KS3/age 13+), a popular comedy manga, which was suggested by a year 9 student. My Deer Friend Nokotan follows the story of Torako, who used to be a bit of a rebel, but to her classmates she’s just the model student. But everything shifts when Nokotan, a transfer student sporting antlers, shows up. Those antlers aren’t the only peculiar thing about her. Nokotan’s ‘deer’ nose can uncover Torako’s secret history! Whether they’re at school or the zoo, this doe-eyed girl seems to attract chaos. Torako wonders if Nokotan is a deer, a girl, or maybe something in between?

We have had some new manga books kindly donated from a member of staff recently, to add to our growing graphic novel section. Deathnote Volumes 1 – 7 by Tsugumi Ohba and The Promised Neverland books 1 – 2 by Kaiu Shirai, both are suitable for KS4 students (15+). All new manga books are available to borrow.

KS3 Bookmark Competition 2025
Our design a bookmark competition will be launched soon and we are very excited to see some creative bookmark designs from our SGS students. The winning bookmark design will be printed out and available in the library.

Full details will follow soon… so keep looking out!
