Sutton Grammar School

Careers & CEIAG

A stable careers programme at Sutton Grammar School provides every student with impartial Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG). The aim of careers education at Sutton Grammar is help students to understand about all available opportunities available to them and to equip them with the knowledge, experiences, attributes and skills to make informed choices at key decision points in their school lives and to help them progress towards a fulfilling career. Our commitment as a school to the principles of providing an inclusive education and developing the whole child are at the heart of the vision we have for careers education. As a result, we are very conscious of both ensuring that the needs and interests of all pupils are catered for, as well as highlighting current local and national labour market opportunities.

The school will continually develop links with parents and carers, alumni, education and training providers alongside employers to ensure our students have the capacity to navigate and succeed in a rapidly evolving global employment landscape so that they leave the school as ambassadors for the schools values, ethos and live their dreams and aspirations making a positive impact on the world. It is through building successful careers that this will be achieved and the leaders of the future will be nurtured and developed.

CEIAG is an integral part of the curriculum vision and delivered to students through a broad combination of Careers Lessons, classroom and Form Time careers activities, subject based learning related to careers, Work Experience, the Personal Development and Citizenship curriculum, Challenge Days, the Lecture Programme, visiting speakers and other co-curricular activities. Throughout their time at school, all students have opportunities to participate in events and gain independent advice through personal guidance from our Independent Careers Adviser. They will also have key Encounters with employers, universities, colleges and vocational and technical providers. Careers education and information is centred around the use of our Careers platform Unifrog, which all students in the school are signed up to. Finally, students and parents also are updated on careers related opportunities in school and beyond in a regular Careers Bulletin.

In line with the Department for Education’s ‘Careers guidance and access for education and training providers’, we are using the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Benchmarks to develop and improve our careers provision.

The benchmarks are:

  1. A stable careers programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

The engagement and support of our local community is invaluable in helping us to build a rich network of contacts with local businesses and education providers to broaden pupils’ horizons. If you would like to be added to our database of contacts to hear about events you might be able to contribute to such as work experience, mock interviews, the Lecture Programme, Career Bites, workshops, Oxbridge preparation or other areas, please do get in touch via the details set out in the Provider Access Statement.

Evaluation

We use the Careers and Enterprise Company’s Compass tool to evaluate how our careers programme performs against the Gatsby Benchmarks. The school’s careers leader also meets termly with our Enterprise Advisor from the South London Careers Hub to discuss our progress and review changes in light of local and national guidance and Labour Market Information. In addition, pupils, parents, staff and external partners are asked for feedback on careers provision in the school via questionnaires and Form Time activities. This feedback is then used to inform future planning and develop the programme.
