Year 7 Forces Learning Objectives

Pupils should:

1.         know that a force is a push, a pull or a twist 

2.         know that force is measured in units called newtons (N) using a newtonmeter 

3.         know that we can use an arrow to represent forces and that the length of the arrow indicates the size of the force whilst the direction of the arrow indicates the direction of the force 

4.         know that more than one force can act on an object 

5.         be able to recognise different forces acting on objects 

6.         be able to calculate the size and direction of a resultant force 

7.         know that if the resultant force is zero then there is no change in speed or direction of the object 

8.         know that if the resultant force is not zero then there may be a change in speed, shape and/or direction of the object 

9.         know that force of gravity pulls all objects towards the centre of the Earth 

10.       know that force of gravity decreases with distance but increases with mass 

11.       know that the force of gravity acting on an object is called weight and measured in newtons 

12.       be able to calculate weight using the equation weight = mass x gravitational field strength 

13.       know what friction is and how it is caused 

14.       know and be able to explain uses and problems caused by friction 

15.       know how to reduce friction by the application of streamlining and lubrication 

16.     know that speed is a measure of how far an object travels in a certain time

17.       know that average speed = distance / time

18.       know that speed is measured in units of metres per second (m/s)

19.       know how to convert km/hr to m/s

20.       know how to measure speed

21.       know how to plot distance/time graphs

22.       know how to calculate the speed from the gradient of a distance/time graph
